Identifying workplace discrimination

On Behalf of | Jun 22, 2015 | Workplace Discrimination |

Workplace discrimination is something that no one likes to think about, but something that is still a very real problem even in the modern day. It is important for workers to be able to recognize discrimination when it happens. This way, they are able to keep themselves and their rights protected, and remain happy with their job situation.

Discrimination comes in different forms, and most of it is illegal in the workplace. This is thanks to Title VII in the Civil Rights Act. The Leadership Conference states that under this act, employers are not legally allowed to discriminate against any employee based on their religion, gender, race, or age. Recent amendments have also made it illegal for pregnant people to be discriminated against. It is also illegal to discriminate against people for their genetic information, which includes any birth defects, physical handicaps or mental handicaps that they may suffer from. Anyone who suffers from discrimination based on any of those categories can legally take action against their employers.

One should also keep an eye out for workplace discrimination that involves their nationality or their status on the socioeconomic ladder. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that these are also among the different types of discrimination that employees are protected against. This means that anyone who is being limited within their job due to their country of origin or how wealthy they are should be able to fight back.

Identifying discrimination can be difficult, especially if it is more subtle. Anyone who suspects that the aforementioned subjects are being used as reason for them being held back in the work place could be facing discrimination. That should be enough of a warning so that they can start monitoring their situation.
