Protect yourself from losing your job over discrimination

On Behalf of | Jun 29, 2015 | Workplace Discrimination |

If you are an employee in the U.S., there are certain protections that you have that will keep an employer from firing you for prejudiced reasons. While not every base is covered by these laws, there are a number of protections that you may have without even knowing about it.

For example, you are protected from being fired solely based on your gender, race or nationality. You are not legally allowed to be fired because of your gender, heritage, or the country that you come from. This also applies to age and disability, and more recently, pregnancy. Medical conditions are sometimes covered under the category of disabilities, but they can also cover accidents or sudden illnesses that force you to take an extended leave of absence.

Religion is another key discrimination point that you are protected against. There is freedom of religion  in the U.S., which means you cannot be fired from your job for your belief system. More recently, a number of states have added amendments that make it illegal for you to be fired because of sexual orientation as well. If you are a member of the LGBTQ spectrum, there are some states that cannot fire you for your orientation or gender alignment. However, a number of states still do not have protection for these things. If one or both categories applies to you, you may wish to check your state’s laws in particular.

It can be humiliating and stressful to deal with discrimination in the workplace. However, it can be handled in a way that will allow you to come out on top. To learn more about keeping yourself protected from prejudice at the workplace, please visit the web site for further information.
