Because all people living in Minnesota have a race, sex and national origin, everyone is covered by the Human Rights Act. The Act protects people against discrimination based on a variety of personal characteristics including color, religion and marital status. It is illegal to discriminate against a person based on these characteristics.
A radio announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers claims he has been subjected to race discrimination for years. The 53-year-old was born in Mexico and has worked for the team for 18 years. When he complained that he was being discriminated against, he claims that his bosses retaliated against him by giving him less work and effectively cutting his paycheck in half with a new contract. He says that although he had the opportunity to participate in other assignments, the team would not allow him to do so. He estimates his lost income to be around $30,000 a year.
The Spanish-language radio announcer filed a discrimination and harassment lawsuit against the team recently in which he is seeking a minimum of $1 million for lost wages and employee benefits and mental pain and anguish and emotional distress. He maintains that he was treated less fairly than his Anglo-American coworkers.
